what the film does

picks up the same night, seconds after the first film ends. laurie strode (jamie lee curtis) is taken to haddonfield memorial hospital while michael myers (dick warlock) walks away from the bullets dr. loomis (donald pleasence) put into him. loomis spends the night hunting michael through the streets while michael works through the hospital staff on the way to laurie’s room. rick rosenthal directed, his debut, from a script carpenter and debra hill wrote. the score returns with a synth version of “mr. sandman” over the opening, and the film introduces the twist that laurie is michael’s sister. it ends with loomis setting off an oxygen tank in the hospital to finish michael.

why this one

the rare sequel that extends the same night instead of repeating it. rosenthal’s debut, carpenter and hill’s script, and a score that plays the original theme against “mr. sandman” like a lullaby from the wrong side of the glass. the hospital setting pushes the film into longer corridors and darker rooms than the original’s suburban houses, and dick warlock’s michael moves slower and more mechanically, which reads as more unnerving, not less. jamie lee curtis’s laurie spends most of the film doped up in a hospital bed, which inverts the final girl: the tension comes from loomis’s hunt on the streets and the staff dying one by one while she sleeps. it also wrote the sibling twist the whole franchise spent decades unpicking, the one carpenter himself said he came up with drunk. for the canon, this is the slasher formula tested the very next year, right after halloween built it.
